Gary Smith
Artist

About the Artist:

Gary is originally from the green state of Michigan where he was educated and lived for 37 years in the city of Port Huron. Since 1983 his home has been in, Orange Park, Florida. His family consists of a very supportive wife (Linda), two children and four grandchildren.

In 1968 Gary began creating wood projects while studying woodcraft in Detroit and has continued woodworking to this day creating rustic furniture and accessories. In 1992 he began his studies in watercolor under Caribbean accomplished artists, continuing studies in landscape painting in Saint Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida. Gary has been blessed with winning several first place and best of show awards for works in watercolor over the years and still enjoys working in this medium.

He has traveled with Linda around the entire continent of South America and numerous countries in Europe which has helped him develop his particular style of impressionistic-realism. Since 2007, Gary has been creating intensive “color in nature” canvases with acrylics and recently began a series focused on the birch tree. Gary states; “Using the pallet knife to create “dimensional texturing” in tree bark, leaves, and flowers gives me a chance to add more depth to my work.”

Being a “mood” painter, Gary relies on music for inspiration, particularly contemporary Christian, to move his art into uncharted territory. He says; “Sometimes it is astonishing what the brush delivers to the canvas while I feel the music. When it works, (and it doesn’t always) I credit God with my talent to deliver the composition with artistic results.”

He divides his creative time between a studio at 4200’ in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina and at a sea level studio on Dr.’s Lake. Gary is a member and supporter of several art guilds and locally is a member of the Art Guild of Orange Park.

Today his art is exhibited in local galleries from North Carolina to Florida. In Jacksonville his work can be seen at Muse’s Corner Gallery and Avondale Artworks. You can also review his work on www.fineartamerica.com
